How should I go about switching to Ubuntu?
I’m a newbie to Linux and I’ve been researching versions and obviously Ubuntu appealed to me, but I’m not sure how to go about switching to Ubuntu. I’d assume using a dual boot at first would be a smart idea to start out with, if not to keep. I am running on Windows Vista home premium on an HP Pavilion laptop. I’m also not sure which version of Ubuntu to get.

I would suggest using the Wubi installer. This enables you to install Ubuntu just like a Windows app. You can remove it from your computer from the add/remove programs. This is a great way to see if you want to use it, without any risk at all to your system. If you decide you want to keep it a permanent part of your computer I would then suggest dual booting the traditional way because the Wubi installer does have some minor limitations mostly its slower. Go to http://wubi-installer.org/ and download the instlaller. It will ask you just a very few simple questions and download Ubuntu for you restart and boot into Ubuntu to complete the setup. I would suggest just good ol’ Ubuntu over Kubuntu but that’s just a matter of opinion. Hope that helps drop me a line if you need help.

You did good step by searching at internet by using your winxp home :=)) you can read many review available in hundreds on web site. Just asking yahoo search or uncle google with keyword ubuntu.
Ubuntu just releasing stable version 8.04 code name Hardy Heron. Before switching to any operating system. You have to aware what you need. The most important consideration is not the operating system, but what application you required, i.e you need autoCad from autodesk, then you can not shift to linux since there is unavilable autocad in linux platform.
However most of applications available at Linux (ubuntu) platform, thus the first step is map your software/applications need, then start join forum and choose your linuc distribution. dual boot is good option due to you will have transition period to learn. Believed me you will quickly in love after using ubuntu and wont back to winxp
