I 2nd that – you can always find a way to do games. Unfortunately I’m still in dual-boot mode because I also use my laptop for DJ gigs, so unless someone knows a sure fire way of using Virtual DJ, Hercules DJ Console RMX controller and ASIO4ALL drivers without any latency and full blown sync between Virtual DJ and iTunes…yeah – haven’t solved that workaround yet! Mixx just doesn’t cut it for me :-)

I will try to answer some of these as i been using ubuntu since version 6.04. I also been using redhat and the new distro from them fedora core. Well not that new, but anyways.

You can use some normal progams like limewire yahoo messenger, adobe reader etc. But do know that this is open source so it is best to use open source apps like open office instead of microsoft office. And best of all, open source apps are free.

There is software called wine (free version) and cedega (paid for version) that is a library of the windows api and used to install windows based apps. Now, not all games/apps will work under wine/cedega. I can tell you for sure that world of warcarft works perfectly for me. Remember every pc is different so it may not be so perfect for you.

Also don’t forget that linux has their own games like alien arena, sebastian (spelling?), nexius, etc.

Basically Synaptic Package manager is an updated list of currently available packages (programs) that you can search through. Trust me there are more then you can shake a stick at. Check out the ubuntu forums to get a general idea of what you are looking for, or even synaptic will give you a small description about that package.

The best thing to learning linux is actually playing around with it will looking up info on the offical ubuntu forums site. Without playing with linux you will never get to understand how great linux (ubuntu in this case) is. But if I am around, and i see people with comments I will try to help.

I wasn’t clear with some things. Synaptic is not only a search app tool, but think of it as a very advanced add or remove programs tool. Not only doest it give you a list of every official program, but you can even add links to it to add more programs. For instance. I use xbmc as my media center of choice. You will need to add this link to synaptic and then you will be able to download and install it.

@scotv453 Open source applications are always free (libera), but do not have to be free (senkosta). They are always free as in freedom, but not free as in free beer. Aurdor 2 for Mac OS X is not free of cost, you have to donate at least one dollar to acquire it.

Not being rude, but as a seasoned linux user….uh, I already knew that. My conversation was based to new users. So the MAJORITY of the open source are free for purchase .

Thanks for the open source definition though, but 9/10 times, if an app costs there will be another that can do almost, or more of, the same thing for free of cost..
