@TearsOfWar1 , all versions of Ubuntu are available in 64bit.

@PCWizKid what? when I download it, it says 32 bit…

@TearsOfWar1, well thats because you got the 32bit version, you need to be-careful and read, sometimes they give you links to getting other versions like the 64bit. I always get the 64bit versions.

Ubuntu is pathetic. I Installed this on my second HD to try it out. # no sound can find drivers (ac 97) # Monitor resolution keeps at 65 Khz even though Nvidia X is installed, no other options, # Ubuntu claims my other HD has “defective sectors” even though various other windows apps find NO errors, etc etc. And if you want to install or change stuff, you have to type code into a friggin console. WTF

    @PCWizKid Yeah…How do I delete an OS? lets say….Ubuntu 32-bit?…

@bicnarok all HD get bad sectors due to the natural oxidation of the spinning disc

Ubuntu is a lot more effective at detecting defective hardware but unlike windows which will hide it Ubuntu will tell you about any defects, just click the box to tell it to stop notifying you… it’s normal for hard drives to get bad sectors after a time…

Ubuntu is a lot more powerful than Windows dude… but u gotta be intelligent enough to set it up, some people aren’t…

@neb967 intelligent enough to code your own drivers, yep your probably right seeing as Ubuntu hardly supports any hardware, and those it does doesn’t work properly

@bicnarok huh what are you talking about ? what does coding your own drivers have to do with anything I was referring to. Ubuntu supports a lot of hardware, in fact it’s far more backward compatible than 7 or Vista is.

My old printer doesn’t work with 7 I had to install all these BIOS & firmware updates to finally get it to work – with my Ubuntu laptop it just worked…

I work for Microsoft & I love their stuff – but when you get down to facts – Ubuntu is faster & less of a resource hog anyday

Are you going to do one of these first look videos for Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) once it comes out?

  • bicnarok

@neb967 Well Ive tried installing it on 3 different machines lately (1 laptop). On all it had no working drivers for the graphics (2 x Nvidia 1 x ATI), on two it wouldn´t let the monitor refresh rate go over 65 Khz. No Wlan for 3 different Wlan sticks etc I could go on and on about the problems. It looks good & I like the feel of it, but its so incompatible its sad, why don´t hardware companies support Linux?

PC please help man when I go to system>preferences>appearance>visual effects
and when I want to click on extra it say that I need to enable NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver and when I click on it it say
    systemerror: failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archieves/lock
    what should I do?

@bicnarok You are clearly not an advanced user. Everything you just said proves that. So unless you have something constructive to say, I suggest you say nothing. Leave the pro operating systems to the pros, and go use your Windows.

I second this, worked flawlessly on my laptop, all bells and whistles, although I use kubuntu I still keep a ub 9.10 around.

@RealNeurotiq Cool – that’s nice to know… the ONLY thing that I can’t yet figure out mainly because I’m too busy is how to configure my iPaq to work with Ubuntu. Any ideas ?

@H4xx0rISCak3 Just because I´m not prepared to waste my time on a wreck of OS doesn´t mean I´m not an advanced user. I have something constructive to say, to those Windows or Mac users who might be thinking of changing to Ubuntu, if you machine came with Ubuntu pre installed then enjoy it, (and the lack of decent apps). Tto those who want to try installing it, backup your files! Make sure you´ve got a windows setup disk ready so you can do a “fixmbr” (repair the master boot record )

@bicnarok and get used to typing the word “sudo …” in a console, yep a console!!:):) Similar to the Dos Box or the console you pull down when playing games like Quake so you can type stuff in. And when you´ve got used to the nice desktop effects which is all you see in videos on youtube (because that´s all there is which is special) and realise that that´s it, and all other games, apps and stuff are vastly inferior (or don´t work) to others on other OS, then go an re install your previous

i think that it maybe a proprietary unit, if work with ubuntu you mean access, you may encounter some problems. does your ipaq work with osx? do you mean recognize linux? cause it takes a lot of extra software to make windows see linux, but linux will see windows.

@RealNeurotiq I have a Compaq HP3760 iPaq it’s REALLY OLD man (2001)… Linux does not seem to pick it up at all…. the iPaq runs Windows mobile… I figure I have to install Linux onto it to get it work properly but I have NO CLUE how to do that without turning it into a total brick…

ive actually started to go back to 32 bit OS due to the fact that 64 bit cant always run everything. Ubuntu 9.10 FTW!
