What document format is compatible with both Open Office and microsoft office?
I have a problem with this because I have open office on my home computer and microsoft office at work. I noticed that some of the formats I used aren’t compatible, but I need a document format that is capable of using more complex formatting that basic rtf.

Why not just use .doc?
If you save in Microsoft Word .doc file at work, OpenOffice will be able to open it, just make sure that when you save after working in OpenOffice at home that you save as the same filetype (.doc)
The same thing goes with excel and powerpoint, ".xls" and ".ppt", respectively.
OpenOffice will by default try to save in .odf format for word documents, .odp for powerpoint presentations, and .ods for excel documents, but just go down on the list for file type and select the Microsoft Office equivalent file extension when you are done working in OpenOffice and will be working on the file in Microsoft Office the next time you open it.
Microsoft’s .doc format is going to be the only one. If you are using Office 2007, when you save for the first time, right under where you type in the file name, you will see a drop-down menu labeled "Save as type:" Just change this from "Word Document (*.docx)" to "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)". If you are using Microsoft Word 2003 or earlier, you don’t need to change anything. Both OpenOffice and Word 2007 can save to .PDF files, so you can also use these to transfer between software suites.
.doc since this format can be read by microsoft word. the thing is word cannot read other formats and if you use office 2007 try getting the latest openoffice 3.0. so that you can read and make .docx files.
As one of your answerers has already said, use .doc the Word format because this is compatible with OpenOffice. All you have to do when you want to open a Word document in OO is to make sure that when you navigate to the window where the document is, that you change the file format box to All Files so you see the Word document, then double click to open without problem. Obviously saving in either rtf or txt format takes away any formatting or layout as you yourself have said, it is basic.
Of course, if you are using Word 2007 at work, and Open Office 3.0 at home, then the file format is .docx
none !
