Wordpress themes and spam and virus?

I stumbled across a magazine online called smashing magazine- www.smashingmagazine.com- they offer all these free wordpress themes- I like alot of them but I am afraid to download because I don’t want any viruses on my computer- however, they state that "all themes have been manually selected, installed and tested over the last weeks." Does anybody know what that means? Does that mean they test for spam/virus?

Well, smashingmagazine is a trust worthy website so don’t worry about it. I’ve been using their theme for my site http://dailywptheme.com for ages and got no problems

I would think that it means it has been tested for virus. Mcafee site adviser gives it an ok with no complaints from users.

What they mean by tested is that the themes actually work.

You should create a download folder on your desktop. When you download anything, only download to this folder. Before using any program, scan it for viruses.

Generally, templates do not have viruses – technically they are text files and are not executable – unless you have PHP and Apache installed on your local machine. The problem here would be when you upload to your website. Then that can be a problem.

Scan your files. You’ll be safe.
