Worked hard on this one. =o) There’s been a lot of controversy around choosing Unity over Gnome 3.. || Join the chat: twitter.com || ..and many of you have requested my opinion. Since recent releases, Ubuntu has used Unity as its default desktop environment. In this week’s episode of OS.ALT I describe the important differences for you, and what the improvements found in the latest version of Unity released with Ubuntu 12.04 mean in comparison with Gnome 3. Hint: Ubuntu 12.04 really floored me, in no small part due to Unity and the HUD.

My Favorite Distro and Learning Linux
on.fb.me Many of you have been wondering where my Linux videos have gone, and I don’t blame you. So to kick off my new Q&A segment, here are two of my most frequently asked questions: What is my favorite Linux distribution, and what resources would I recommend for someone new to learn Linux. Please enjoy it. Links mentioned in the video: www.linuxmint.com and ubuntuforums.org This video was produced on Linux Mint 10 (Julia) and edited entirely using open source programs! What Linux distro to download for maximum Windows software compatibility and feel?
Hello all. I’m a Windows user, but I’d like to try out a Linux distro. I’m looking for an OS that has a similar GUI to windows and similar applications, with high compatibility with Windows programs. I was thinking of Ubuntu. Do you guys have any better suggestions? Thanks.
What is a light, fast linux capable of being a dedicated media player?
Have got an old laptop I’d like to use a dedicated media player. Its got modest specs, having 1.1 Ghz processor and 256-512 mb ram. I’d like to be able to turn it on, and as soon as possible, have a media player with a media library available.
I was assuming a linux distro would be most appropriate, but which one?
Why do I find Linux so appealing and so difficult to migrate to?
I’ve had a partition with a linux distro on about every computer I’ve owned. I will install the OS, do the updates, run into some compatibility issues and not bother any longer. How can I solve this?
What is the best linux distribution for learning to use many?
First, a bit about my background.. I currently work as a Network Engineer, mainly with Cisco routers/switches and VPN devices. I am thoroughly familiar with Windows, both as a workstation and server, and have one more test to go to complete my MCSE. However, I have no real experience with Linux, and feel like this is both a hole in my personal knowledge and in my resume. 🙂 I can do basic user stuff both from a command line and in Xwindows, but have no real command of it.
That said, I intend to rectify this. I want to start using Linux as my primary operating system on my personal PC, as I feel this is a great first step to really force myself to learn it. I need to know what distribution would be best for me to use. My concern is some of them seem to have a lot of proprietary tools that are not found in other linux distros, I want to find one to learn on that will best allow me to be comfortable on any linux distro I run into in the future. Thanks much for your advice!
