What is the best Linux software to convert and burn movies?

I use Linux Mint 9 and I’ve been trying to burn downloaded movies in VCD format. I’ve managed to burn a DVD with Brasero and I used K3b to burn a VCD but the picture playback was awful, it was showing in the top right quarter of my screen with what seemed to be a menu on the rest of the screen. I’ve looked at the software settings but to no avail. What software do you suggest for both quality and ease of use? Thanks in advance.

In this video, you’ll see FL Studio 7 running in Windows XP within Ubuntu on a PC. I’ve also demonstrated the 3D capabilities of the following software combination: Ubuntu Feisty, Beryl, VMWare Workstation 6 (running Windows XP with FL Studio 7 running perfectly with very little CPU usage), Google Earth & Mozilla Firefox w/ Flash 9.
