What are the differences between UNIX and Linux, and what about all those choices within Linux?
What are the operational differences between Linux and UNIX? Why would a programmer choose one over the other? What about software selection and ease of programming (with already basic knowledge of programming, and wanting to dive in to open source)?
In terms of Linux, what makes things like Red Hat cost money and things like Ubuntu not? Is pay-for OS based on Linux better quality than freely distributed OS? What is the best choice for Linux-or-Unix OS for a budding programmer?
How do developers make money from free or open source software?
I’m talking about good applications or web-based software like CMSs – how do they make money if the item is free or open source… How do they stop people ripping them off or taking the project in the wrong direction? what license should I get to make the most out of something I hope to write?
How do I go about publishing freeware, I want to make open source?
I have just written a program. Now I want to make it free to all and open source. I want to allow others to edit it, but I don’t want to someone else to steal the name. I don’t have any money for copyright, so that’s out of the question.
What would be the best way to start an open source game organisation?
One of my little ‘dreams’ is to create an online organisation that is dedicated to making video games that are open source and free. I realise that I need a website and do some advertising and such, but how would you suggest starting something like this using little to no money.
Thanks in advanced.
How to earn money through open source software?
I know all the positives of open source software, but what I am asking is this. Is it possible to make money out of it? If yes, how?
If it isn’t possible, then can we hope for a future where all software will be open source? I doubt there will be many people wanting to "work" for free. Would it attract less people to software development? How will it affect software companies?
How open source software companies make profit?
Companies such as videolan, Mozilla, canonical ,etc make open source software. These companies have programmers as employees and they have other expenses such as server maintainance, still they are not in loss. How they make money?
Do you think Open Source will ever be really accepted, understood and used in the corporate sector?
I am into Open Source. Every year, the competition with proprietary software just keeps on getting harder. It doesn’t help that our principal does not understand how our market works as well. It’s all about the numbers and the worst of it is that the principal has no money for marketing.
Is there an open source music mixing program similar to Acid Pro that I can use?
I want to make some of my own music for background ambiance in some youtube videos, but before I cough up a ton of money for some software, I wanted to see if there’s a decent open source rival for it.
