Hardening Windows processes

Didier Stevens is an IT security consultant working for a large financial corporation in Belgium. In this video recorded at Hack in The Box 2012 Amsterdam, Didier talks about hardening Windows processes and he discusses Microsoft’s Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET). Didier also introduces HeapLocker, his open source tool that mitigates heap spray attacks. Like Microsoft’s EMET, HeapLocker will pre-allocate virtual memory pages to protect the addresses often used in exploits with heap sprays. However, HeapLocker can go one step further than EMET – it can inject its own shellcode to warn the user in case of an attack. HeapLocker can also pre-allocate memory page zero. To detect heap sprays in action, HeapLocker monitors private memory usage and it can also monitor the application’s memory for NOP-sleds. Kickstarter to the rescue! In this week’s GeekBuzz I talk about Ouya, a new gaming console that is based on the open-source Android operating system. Its Kickstarter campaign has raised almost .5 million dollars in under two days, with almost 25000 consoles already sold! Its goal is to provide a platform for indie & open development, with games that are free to play or at least free to try, and have the console itself cost less than 0. Can the Ouya compete with the PS3, XBox360, Wii or WiiU? Check out the video for more info! OUYA’s Website – www.kickstarter.com || Free Gamefly Trial for watching! gamefly.com

Fedora 17 KDE Review – Linux Distro Reviews

So here is a review of the KDE under Fedora 17. Looks good.

Overall, this respin of Fedora 17 provides the same great stable base as the Gnome version, but with a very nicely unified KDE 4.8.3 Software Compilation. Complete with all of the great KDE apps, the Calligra Suite also makes a stable debut. Faster login time as well as easier – but somewhat old school – package management, Fedora 17 KDE is looking like a very worth while release. Thanks for the feedback everybody! Unity vs Gnome Shell – Desktop Comparison

Worked hard on this one. =o) There’s been a lot of controversy around choosing Unity over Gnome 3.. || Join the chat: twitter.com || ..and many of you have requested my opinion. In this week’s episode of OS.ALT I describe the important differences for you, and what the improvements found in the latest version of Unity released with Ubuntu 12.04 mean in comparison with Gnome 3. Hint: Ubuntu 12.04 really floored me, in no small part due to Unity and the HUD.
